Horrifying: Children Deported Back to Honduras Are Being Killed


The Los Angeles Times reports that undocumented migrant children who are being deported back to Honduras are being murdered upon their return to their native country.

Hector Hernandez, who runs a morgue in San Pedro Sula, told the paper that between five and 10 children who have been brought to his morgue had been recently deported from the United States. "There are many youngsters who only three days after they've been deported are killed, shot by a firearm," he said. "They return just to die."

San Pedro Sula, the second largest city in Honduras, suffers from a murder rate of 187 people per 100,000 inhabitants. According to Pew Research Center analysis of data provided by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Honduras' overall homicide rate was 90 per 100,000 people in 2012 — making it the highest murder rate in the world. The site suggests that gangs and drug-trafficking fuel much of the violence.
