Introducing Los Rakas
Alejandro Núñez Ferrara

Though it has been years since Los Rakas lived in Panama, the country’s plena and reggae music maintain a prominent foothold in the duo’s work. So great is the influence that the group, made up of cousins Raka Dun and Raka Rich, have married the sounds almost effortlessly with hip-hop. The result is Chancletas y Camisetas Bordada, the duo’s first official EP – available on iTunes today

Though young, Los Rakas is far from musical infancy. During last year’s Latin Alternative Music Conference, the Californian duo took home the ‘Discovery Artist’ prize, which awards the most promising group at the event. This year, they performed with Bermudan dancehall artist Collie Buddz and have had a slew of festival appearances, such as Snoop Dogg’s Spring Gathering in June and Central Park Summerstage this past Saturday in New York City. Before their performance at Central Park Summerstage, Los Rakas chatted with about Chancletas y Camisetas Bordada, their favorite thing about being Latinos, and a really cool surprise in the new EP – which involves someone’s abuelita.
