Ana Ortiz: Coolest TV Mom
Our choice for coolest TV Mom is none other than Ugly Betty’s Hilda Suarez! Played by Ana Ortiz during Betty’s four year run (2006-2010) Hilda was mommy to super-fabulous Justin (Mark Indelicato). We love Hilda because she demonstrates the same amazing qualities that we see in our own mothers: A willingness to help others, acceptance of those who are different (especially when it comes to her son who was obviously gay) and remarkable strength in the face of great adversity. Despite becoming pregnant at a young age and losing her son’s father, Santos to a senseless act of violence, Hilda always maintained a healthy sense of humor. What's not to love about this woman?
Eva Longoria Parker: The Mom Who Loves You for You
When Desperate Housewives premiered on ABC in 2004, Eva Longoria Parker’s character, Gabrielle Solis, was a materialistic, vapid, and frustrated housewife who was caught having a scandalous affair with her teenage gardener, John Rowland (Jesse Metcalfe). But when DH jumped forward in time five years at the start of season 5, Gabrielle became the loving mother to two frumpy, overweight little girls named Juanita and Celia. Gabrielle makes our list because she’s a mother who loves her daughters for who they are—not what they look like, and she teaches her girls that it’s what’s on the inside that truly matters.
Sofia Vergara: The Mom Who Puts You First
Sofia Vergara’s character, the effortlessly sexy Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on ABC’s hit comedy Modern Family, has one priority in life: her son, Manny (Rico Rodriguez). She may be married to (and in love with) Jay (Ed O’Neill), but if you notice, she never puts him or his needs before her son. And no matter how much Jay makes fun of Manny for clinging to his culture or dressing a certain way, Gloria encourages her son to be as sensitive, as romantic and as proud of his heritage as he wants to be. We think that makes her an amazing madre!
Paola Turbay: The Mom Who Takes the Time to Listen
Paola Turbay’s "Secret Life of the American Teenager" character, Cindy Lee has got her hands full with her daughter Adrian (Francia Raisa). Adrian likes to jump into bed with a different guy every night, and she’s always dealing with some kind of drama. We love Cindy because rather than yell and scream at Adrian at the top of her lungs, she’s the kind of mom who really takes the time to try and understand her daughter’s behavior. She listens, and always finds a solution to the problem.
Joanna Garcia: The Mom Who Does a Million Different Things
Joanna Garcia’s character, Cheyenne Hart-Montgomery on the WB’s hit sitcom Reba (2001-2007), was—like Reba—a single mom who worked too hard, loved her kids, and never stopped. Despite becoming pregnant right before the start of her senior year and giving birth to her daughter, Elizabeth on her graduation day, Cheyenne never saw her unplanned pregnancy as a nuisance. Through it all, she remained happy and most importantly in control as she juggled work, school and parenthood. We love Cheyenne because she reminds us of our mothers—multi-tasking women who do a variety of different things all the interest of making their family better, and never complain that they're working too hard.
Rosie Perez: The Mom Who Stands Up for What’s Right
Last year, the writers of Law and Order: SVU created a special character with Rosie Perez in mind—and that was a very good idea. Rosie guest-starred on SVU last October, playing the role of fiercly protective mother who discovers her son has been the victim of sexual abuse. Rosie’s character, Eva Banks is one of our favorite TV moms of all time because she showed great courage, strength and resiliency in the interest of doing the most important thing any mother can do: Fight for their child and fight for justice! Eva Banks represents every mother out there who has ever had to go to great lengths to defend her kid.
Laura Harring: The Mother Chucker Award for Worst Mother of the Year
Laura Harring plays Chuck Bass’s (Ed Westwick) mother, Elizabeth Bass on Gossip Girl, and we’re being nice when we say that Elizabeth is one bad broad! First, she told Chuck she was his real mom; then told him she wasn’t. Then she changed her story again in order to trick him into signing his company over to her, just before changing her story again and abandoning him for good. We highly doubt Chuck will send Liz a Mother’s Day gift.
