Depicting diversity hasn’t always been a top concern for ad agencies or the general public. (Heck, that’s the reason Latina magazine was founded in the first place). But as demographics change and lifestyles do, too, it’s become apparent to many that the people we see in the media we consume should reflect our society – because we’re all beautiful and human and worthy. Here are the best commercials highlighting and celebrating life as we know it. Bravo, brands.

Honey Maid, a name that has been a household staple for 90 years, has warmed our hearts with their newest campaign: “This Is Wholesome.” Featuring real families (not actors), including an interracial military family, a gay couple and their two sons, a punk-rocker and his wife and daughter, and a single dad raising his son, this campaign encourages viewers to join in the conversation online with their own family photos and the hashtag #ThisisWholesome. Ah, the commercial that spawned hundreds of ignorant tweets. Sorry, haters – America has always been a mosaic of cultures, races and – yes – languages. The newest Coca-Cola spot highlights America’s rich diversity with different voices singing “America the Beautiful,” in different languages, including Spanish. Y nos gusta mucho!
Cheerios received a ton of criticism when they debuted this commercial with a mixed-race family. They even had to disable YouTube comments for all the hateful messages they received. But we love a company that stands by their (enlightened) message. They released a follow-up commercial a couple of months later featuring the same family.
Chevrolet’s “The New Us” campaign (#TheNew), rolling out during the U.S. broadcast of the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics showed where Chevy stood in contrast to Russian LGBT laws. The commercials t blended real-life families and narration to create a loving picture. As Chevy states, “while what it means to be a family hasn’t changed, what a family looks like has.”
Girls can do anything, and this commercial celebrates that by making sure all girls can see themselves in the commercial spot: black, white, Asian, Hispanic; Straight hair, curly hair, red hair, black hair – they definitely worked hard to be as inclusive as possible, and we love that. Si se puede!
