Weekend Getaway: San Antonio Is Pure Tex-Mex Charm

River Walk in San Antonio, Texas

For the final day of your weekend escape, take a quiet morning to explore some of the rich history San Antonio has to offer. In addition to countless museums -- the Briscoe Western Art Museum, the Witte Museum, etc. -- the city is home to a collection of famous Missions, including the Alamo. Taking a guided tour through these missions is a fantastic idea for history buffs -- especially if you’re even remotely curious about the connection between Texan and Mexican history.

For lunch, stop off at a San Antonio landmark: Mi Tierra. Don’t except anything fancy -- Mi Tierra is as kitschy as it gets, with Christmas lights hanging year round for decoration. But, the food is authentic and delicious, and they even have a bakery out front offering visitors a taste of pan dulce, empanadas, and marranitos. We recommend ordering the Deluxe Mexican Dinner, a combo platter that includes authentic Mexican favorites like beef tacos, cheese enchiladas, beef steak ranchero, a tamal and rice and beans. Top off the meal with a frozen margarita and an order of crispy sopapillas with honey.

Before you head back to the hotel, be sure to take a quick peek at the back room of Mi Tierra -- nearly every inch of wall space is covered with murals and portraits of celebrities and native San Antonians who have made an impact upon the restaurant. Sprinkled among paintings of the founder, his family, his dog, and his friends are homages to San Antonio natives Eva Longoria, George Lopez, and more. Texan Selena Quintanilla has an entire corner of the room dedicated to her, with a huge shrine and portrait honoring the deceased singer.

As you start to wrap up your trip, don't forget to take a stroll throughout the surrounding shops and flea markets. The shops are a treasure trove for unique and inexpensive home decorations and souvenirs for friends back home. As you check out of the Westin Riverwalk, take a peek at the Riverwalk from the expansive windows in the hotel's lobby. At sunset, the smooth, quietly rippling river combines with the sparkling overhead lights to create an atmosphere that's distinctly San Antonio.
