I just saw the movie musical Nine last night. Never have I more wanted to tease my hair, put on a bustier and dance in front of a mirror then after those credits rolled! What performances from such talented chicas—specifically from Oscar winner Penelope Cruz. But being the beauty junkie that I am, I more than noticed how important a role hair played in the film.

My fine hair can get pretty greasy at times, especially at the roots. So you know what I do when I find my locks in an oily way? I take the facial blotting papers I keep in my purse and dab them onto my scalp. They absorb some of the oil from my hair and make me feel Macgyver-like smart in the process. I love the Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets ($5, drugstore.com); they’re tough enough to handle the job!

If you have never tried this wildly popular shade of Clinique Almost Lipstick ($14, clinique.com), you might as well buy it now. Because everyone – and I mean everyone – who tries it, loves it. The sheer blackberry shade magically works on every skin tone and the light formula is a dream to wear. I own one, and have owned several others that were worn down to a nub. Oh, and it makes a great gift for any girlfriend, too!

Goodness, it’s like national J.Lo appreciation day up on this website! And you know what? Make room for me on the train, ‘cause I’m hoppin’ on! Can we talk about just how pretty Miss Jennifer looked on So You Think You Can Dance? I am totally stealing her beauty look for my annual family Christmas Eve party. Her face just looks so sparkly and festive! Here’s how you can steal it, too:

Don’t you h.a.t.e. it when you love a jam on an album, and you totally think it’s u.r. own and then it slams into heavy rotation on the radio? That’s how I’m feeling about Mariah Carey’s “H.A.T.E.U.,” a slow burner off her latest CD, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. I’m not usually into Mariah, but I just l.o.v.e. this song about a girl who loved her man so much that even after a breakup, she can’t bring herself to h.a.t.e. him. But then I saw the video. It’s Mariah on a beach in a bathing suit, emoting with her butterfly ring and sparkly bangles.

I don’t carry eye shadow in my purse. Which is weird because I carry everything else in my purse—gift cards, bills, lipglosses, keys, old receipts, tweezers, spare earrings, essentials like that. I rarely wear eye shadow because it takes some thought beforehand (what color to choose?) and a bit of time and concentration to apply. But today I decided to play with the incredibly creamy Benefit Creaseless Cream Eyeshadow/Liner ($19, benefitcosmetics.com) in Birthday Suit.

I have a friend of a friend who feels the need to shorten words. And I have to admit, the habit is contage. Anyway, I was at a photo shoot recently where the makeup artist was raving about these Japanese blotting papers. They are literally made of gold—or speckled with gold leaf, that is. I was feeling like my skin was truly atrosh that day, so I tried the Tatcha Aburatorigami Japanese Blotting Papers (3 pack for $30, tatcha.com).

In preparation of my big cohabitational apartment move next week, I have been hearing this unrelenting chant in my head: “Purge! Purge! Purge! Purge!” Throw it all away has been my motto, but never is it so hard to do then when I am in front of my makeup baskets. I can toss shoes easier than I can toss five-year-old lipgloss. Every shade of pink is prettier and way different than the last, every “nude” lipstick is a drastically different interpretation of beige. How to draw the line? Well, I’ll tell you: If your makeup displays any of the following characteristics, you must chuck it:

If you apply a touch of highlighter or iridescent eye shadow along your inner eye corners, it makes your eyes look wide and awake. It’s a good trick, but I don’t do it much. Then I came across L’Oreal Paris HIP High Intensity Pigments Color Chrome Eyeliner in Silver Lightening ($10, drugstore.com), a creamy feels-so-good formula liner.

I often imagine myself a woman of intense mystery. In my mind I am frequently draped in a dark black trench coat, black fedora tipped seductively over one eye, walking purposefully down a winding street in knee-high black boots. I could be going on a secret mission, or returning from a lover’s alcove, you wouldn’t know from looking at me; you would just know I was mysterious. And the clincher would be a rich and deeply seductive fragrance that would linger about me like an intoxicating cloud. It would be my secret weapon.
