The obesity epidemic is no joke. Although it’s affecting our community in various ways, including Latino kids being more likely to be overweight than others, one of the worst results is that overweight and obese women are getting pregnant--and risking their lives and those of their babies. We don’t want to scare you but we do want to make you aware of the risks and how to avoid them. We know you just want to have a healthy, happy baby. Here’s why that means dropping some pounds before getting pregnant.

When I was a child and my family first came to the U.S., I remember going to McDonald’s and drinking a lot of soda constantly. Although I was always a bit on the chubby site, it wasn’t long before my weight ballooned up thanks to all of the junk food advertising I was suddenly seeing everywhere.
I remember fighting with my mom as a teen, when she tried to get me to cut back on my soda habit. I refused. It shouldn’t have surprised me when, a couple of years later, my weight hit 200 pounds. At 5’2”, that was quite a big number.

Fitness isn’t just about being able to squeeze into skinny jeans and minidresses —you’ve got Spanx for that. Truth is, you want to feel sexy, beautiful, confident and, above all, healthy so you can dance the night away with your girlfriends, kick the ball around with your kids and be up for whatever steamy adventure your partner proposes. Eva Longoria bounced back from her split from Tony Parker, but the self-proclaimed “hopeless optimist” told Health in the January issue that the divorce took a toll on her physically.
“I remember after my divorce, I was so thin and everyone kept saying how great I looked. It was probably the most unhealthy place I’ve ever been,” Longoria told the magazine. “So it was funny what people would see me as ‘healthy.’ In my worst time, people were saying I’ve never looked better.”
