First, the good news: The kidnapped newborn of Nashville resident Maria Gurrolla was found unharmed in a home in Ardmore, Ala., about 80 miles south of Nashville near the Tennessee line. Four days after Gurrolla, 30, gave birth to Yair Anthony Carillo, a knife-wielding woman posing as an immigration agent stabbed the young mother in her neck and upper chest before stealing the baby. Gurrolla’s 3-year-old daughter was left untouched.

Maria Gurrolla had no idea who the woman was who showed up at her doorstep posing as an immigration official. "She said she was an immigration officer and she was there to arrest her," Gurrolla's cousin said, serving as interpreter for the AP. The unidentified woman pushed her way into the home and proceeded to the kitchen where she grabbed a butcher knife and stabbed Gurrolla repeatedly. Gurrolla ran to her neighbor Eric Peterson's home to plead for help.

A teenage Brazilian girl has admitted to embarking on a killing spree that left 30 men dead. The 17-year-old confessed her murders to police in Sao Paolo after being arrested for getting into a street fight in the Sao José de Rio Preto neighborhood.

Police in Sao Paolo, Brazil, are investigating Brazilian state legislator Wallace Souza, who is also the host of the popular crime television show Canal Livre. Authorities suspect the politician of ordering at least five murders to bolster his ratings and emphasize his point that violence was skyrocketing in the Amazon region of the country.

Since 1993, countless women have been murdered in Ciudad Juarez, their bodies displaying signs of sexual abuse and torture, dumped in empty lots and ditches around the city. Most of the murders remain unsolved, even after the creation of a special prosecutor's office to look into the crimes. After a spike in media interest in the story back in 2006—culminating in 2007 with the publication of Daughters of Juarez, a book by journalist Teresa Rodriguez—these women were forgotten.

Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez is up in arms about a proposed agreement for Colombia to lease seven military bases to the United States.
Warning that the presence of U.S. troops could be used to destabilize the region, Chavez declared, "The threat against us is growing. I call on the people and the armed forces, let's go, ready for combat!" The socialist leader also warned Colombian president Alvaro Uribe that "Venezuela's military will respond if there's an attack against Venezuela."

The home of the police commander of Veracruz, Mexico, Jesus Antonio Romero, was set on fire on Wednesday morning, killing him and his family. Romero had just recently been appointed operations chief for the joint police force of Veracruz and Boca del Rio when an unknown number of gunmen attacked his home.

30 people died over just a 48-hour period this week in Mexico. The victims included 12 police officers whose bodies were discarded along a road and found on Tuesday in Michoacan. The bodies of 11 men and one female, who had been investigating drug related crimes in the area, were identified yesterday as police. Police spokesman Monte Alejandro Rubido said the bodies were piled on top of each other and displayed signs of torture.

A dozen bound and tortured bodies were discovered dumped on the side of a remote highway in Michoacán. Police found the latest victims of the ongoing battle between rival drug traffickers on Monday.
A threatening message was located near the beaten bodies of 11 men and one woman piled up and wrapped in a tarp, police revealed at the scene. Sadly, this has become a frequent occurrence: Last week, police found four bodies and a menacing note in the same spot.
