The Penelope Cruz Oscar race just got a little murkier. At the Critic's Choice Awards last night in Santa Monica, the actress actually lost an award...*sniffle*...in the Best Supporting Actress category. The honors went to Kate Winslet instead, for her role in a little flick no one saw called The Reader. Luckily for Kate, we love her as much as Eva Mendes does, so we won't hold any grudges.

The Screen Actors Guild Award nominations were announced this morning, and we'd like to say felicidades to America Ferrera, who will vie for Oustanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series. The Ugly Betty star won the award in 2007 but lost to 30 Rock's Tina Fey this year, so expect a showdown between these TV divas when the awards air on January 25! Or maybe not, since neither of them is particularly diva-like, and everyone and their dog is obsessed with Tina this year...but here's hoping anyway.

The good news keeps coming for Vicky Cristina Barcelona, which scored four nominations today for the 2009 Golden Globes. The quirky little movie about travel, art, polyamory and hot sexy Spaniards was nominated for Best Feature - Comedy, while Javier Bardem picked up a nomination for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical and Rebecca Hall for Best Actress. Winners won't be announced until the show goes down on January 11 in Beverly Hills and airs live on NBC.

It pains us to deliver this news, but Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem's seemingly perfect relationship looks like it could be headed for trouble. Though last we heard, the couple was spending quality time together on a private island near Belize, Spanish gossip hounds now report that the couple is in a state of crisis, and it's all because of Javier's hectic film schedule.

We think it's time for Penélope Cruz to take some lessons in media training. The notoriously media-shy actress has been more evasive than usual recently, while doing press for her new film Vicky Cristina Barcelona (co-starring Scarlett Johannsen and Penélope's boyfrien,d Javier Bardem).
Penélope appeared at an intimate New York screening of the film, and spoke to reporters on the red carpet before joining Javier, director Woody Allen, and many of New York's glitterati in the theater.

Penelope Cruz knows when to keep her mouth open (when she's in the middle of a three-way kiss between Scarlett Johanssen and Javier Bardem) and when to keep it shut (when nosy journalists repeatedly ask about said kiss).
"Really, Scarlett and I have run out of lines to say about that," the star told Newsweek. "We're calling Woody [Allen] to give us some material. People love that subject. The only thing which is honest, the set was very crowded that day. But I don't have anything else to tell you about it."

Penelope Cruz may be on top of her game these days (red-hot career, gorgeous boyfriend, looks that could kill), but she wasn't always living the life of an A-lister. The normally reclusive Spanish star reveals a side of herself to W magazine we've never seen before—vulnerable, insecure, and impossibly shy for a woman whose every move is clocked by paparazzi.
