Mariano Rivera, the closer for the New York Yankees who made the cut fastball famous, set the Major League Baseball (MLB) all-times saves record last night with 602 saves. Until yesterday, the Panamanian 41-year-old athlete’s career saves were tied 601 to retired player Trevor Hoffman. “For the first time in my career, I’m on the mound alone,” Rivera told the Associated Press.

New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez recently shot a commercial for Pepsi MAX and took time out to give his take on preparation for the new season and football’s growing popularity in Mexico. “Not quite as popular as soccer, but it’s big,” the 24-year-old Mexican American said. “There’s fans down there that know who I am, know who other players are and that’s important so we want to thank them for their support and keep them excited about the game.”

— Colombia has its first 3D animated film out next month, Tr3s reports. Directed by Jairo Carrillo, Pequeñas Voces (Little Voices) it is a compilation of four children (ages 8-13) telling their own life stories. According to the website, Pequeñas Voces is about how Colombia’s internal guerrilla way has affected its youth. Adult voices are completely ignored in the film.

August 4th must be his lucky day! Exactly three years to the day after reaching the 500 mark, Dominican baseball player Alex Rodriguez hit his 600th career home run in Yankee Stadium on Wednesday.
