Nicaragua’s total abortion ban is being challenged by a cancer patient who wants to terminate her pregnancy so that she can receive treatment. Doctors at the state hospital in Leon (55 miles west of Managua) have refused to give her medical care because it would harm the 10-week-old fetus. The local paper La Prensa then published the patient’s sister’s request bringing the case to the public’s attention.

The NY Times recently ran a heartbreaking story about Elizabeth Drummond and Segundo Encalada, a couple who were married with children when Encalada was forced by immigration officials to take a "voluntary departure" back to Ecuador. A lawyer advised the Drummond-Encalada family that the process of obtaining a visa from a United States Consulate in Encalada's native Ecuador would take two months to a year.

Some people are up in arms about a recent report that the Viradouro samba school has selected seven-year-old Julia Lira to be their Queen for the huge annual Carnival parade in the Sambodromo. Julia's father, Marco Lira, is the owner of the samba school and her mother, Monica Lira, is a police official. Both parents think it is totally acceptable for their daughter to take on the role, even though it is normally reserved for women in their late teens and twenties.

Thalía is ready to expand her brood. The Mexican star, who just released a book about pregnancy entitled Thalía: ¡Radiante!, tells Siempre Mujer that she'd love to repeat the experience she had giving birth to her first daughter, 18-month-old Sabrina Sakaë: "Being pregnant changed my life forever. Dessa's bedtime routine every night goes something like this: dinner, bath, lotion, PJ's, two books and then down for the night—in our bed. Yep, you read that right. Dessa doesn't sleep in her own bed and never has. It didn't happen accidentally and it's not a once in awhile thing. I always knew that I wouldn't put Dessa in a crib (unless she asked for it). It didn't seem natural to me. I had just carried her inside me for 9 months and then, when she finally arrived, I was going to kick her out? I don't think so.

Well it's about time! Ricky Martin introduced his twin sons to the world this morning via a beachside photo spread in the new issue of People Magazine. The boricua star is pictured cradling 4-month-old Matteo and Valentino Martin alongside la playa in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and per usual, he's got nothing but beautiful, spiritually enlightened words to share. "Everything they do, from smiling to crying, feels like a blessing," says Ricky.
