This year, our minds and hearts have been widened and re-shaped thanks to our Inspiring Latinas column. Since we launched the weekly column in early January, we've told the stories of strong, everyday Latina women who wake up every morning to follow their ambitions - much to our admiration.

We previously reported on the inspirational story of Mercedes Ramirez Johnson, who survived a tragic plane crash in 1995. Johnson lost her parents in the accident and suffered severe injuries. Despite all of the challenges she faced, the mother of four boys finished college and transformed her terrible experience into a hopeful story. In honor of her powerful experience, we are highlighting our 4 Inspiring Latinas of the Month.

Last week, we kicked off "Inspiring Young Latina of the Week," a unique weekly column where we will be profiling young Latinas who are making a difference in America. We asked Latina’s readers on Facebook to send in their stories of trailblazing mujeres to us, and while we received a handful, one heartfelt story emerged that left us incredibly touched.
