Puerto Rico Governor Luis Fortuño Calls in National Guard to Counter Crime

The governor of Puerto Rico announced this week that he was activating the National Guard in the small island commonwealth. The measure was intended to be a temporary move to help curb rising crime rates while new police forces are recruited and trained.

"Nobody, especially me, can be happy with the number of killings last year. We have to do much more to stop this," Gov. Luis Fortuño declared during his State of the Commonwealth speech.

Obama Promises to Address Status of Puerto Rico

Barack Obama has pledged to allow Puerto Rico to once and for all tackle the issue of its political status in his first term as president of the United States.

The controversial subject of Puerto Rico's status has been dividing the population of the small island territory for years, with some residents favoring state-hood, others favoring independence and some favoring the current commonwealth status.
