Colombian musician Juanes has been under fire ever since he announced his second “Peace Without Borders” concert would be held in Havana’s Revolution Plaza on Sept. 20. According to the singer’s manager, Fernan Martinez, “the event will use music as a tool to transcend politics and demonstrate unity of peoples beyond borders.” But Miami’s anti-Castro population is not having it, claiming that the guitar-strumming artist is just another pawn in the “despotic regime.”

Colombian singer, activist and heartthrob Juanes continues to raise awareness about the precarious working conditions for miners in Tumaco, Colombia. Tumaco is a town mainly known for the numerous mine causalities that take place there. Juanes welcomed the U.S. ship USNS Comfort on Sunday as part of an emergency medical mission. The USNS Comfort is a floating hospital that will offer medical attention to more than 10,000 Colombians who desperately need the care but cannot afford it. The ship will remain in Tumaco until June 16.

Lil Wayne and Coldplay (or as our Sound Check blog would say, the abominable Coldplay) might've topped the list of 2008 Grammy nominees, but among the mainstream contenders announced Wednesday night there were plenty of Latin surprises!
The biggest was for newcomer Karina Pasian--the 17-year old Dominican songstress scored a Best Contemporary R&B Album nomination for her self-titled debut, and she'll go head to head with Mary J.
