For weeks, J.R. Martinez and his dancing partner Karina Smirnoff have been sailing through the competition on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars—but last night, the Army Veteran had an off night. "We're all going to have a bad week," the Salvadorian Martinez told People.com backstage at Monday night's show. "If America pulls us through, I'm going to bust my ass this coming week and I'm going to come back strong."

On last night’s Dancing With the Stars, part-Salvadorian J.R. Martinez delivered a performance that got audience members on their feet—and moved him to tears. The 28-year-old soldier-turned-actor and the other show contestants were challenged to choose a song to perform to that reflected the most memorable year in their lives. During a 2003 deployment in Iraq, Martinez suffered burns that covered 40 percent of his body after driving a Humvee over a landmine.

Before he was a TV star, J.R. Martinez was an infantryman in the U.S. Army. During his deployment to Iraq in 2003, the Salvadoran served as a Humvee driver, and when his left front tire hit a landmine, Martinez suffered burns to more than 40 percent of his body. Since then, the Army vet has undergone 33 cosmetic and skin graft surgeries.

For J.R. Martinez, drama is an occupation – and a part of his past. The 28-year-old actor stars in the ABC soap, All My Children. A large part of Martinez’s face is scarred, which serve as clues to a life-altering accident he had while serving in the U.S. Army years ago. The Salvadorian actor has overcome a great deal since then, including more than 30 surgeries and physical therapy.

Yesterday, we reported that Salvadorean soap star J.R. Martinez (All My Children) will be one of the stars competing on the 13th season of ABC's Dancing with the Stars (premiering Sept. 19th on ABC).
