Cuban-born American fashion designer Isabel Toledo—who gained notoriety a year ago when she dressed First Lady Michelle Obama for Inauguration Day— announced yesterday that she will be design a lower-priced diffusion line of shoes and purses for Payless.

After Michelle Obama chose Isabel Toledo’s lemongrass-colored design to wear to her husband’s swearing in ceremony, Creative Director of Barneys New York and personal friend of the designer, Simon Doonan, decided to tear down the window displays of the Madison Avenue store and replace them with an homage to Toledo.

We weren't the only ones pleasantly surprised to see Michelle Obama wearing a dress by Isabel Toledo at yesterday's inauguration. So was the designer herself!
“We’re all up here watching the T.V.,” Toledo told the New York Times, just as the ceremony was underway. “It’s great. We’re so happy.” The Cuban American designer says she was not absolutely sure that the First Lady would be wearing her look until it was there for all the world to see.
