California Gov. Jerry Brown has been working hard to sign bills into law that will speed up the assmilation of immigrants in the country illegally -- at least throughout California. A study conducted by the University of Southern California found that over 2.6 million people in the state of California, the majority being Latinos, do not have legal status.

Monday evening the Senate took a big step forward in the push to overhaul the nation's immigration laws. Enough senators have come to endorse a proposal that will increase the amount of security currently at United States' borders.

Latinos’ enthusiasm and energy after President Obama announced young student or military illegal immigrants would not be deported could have powered a small city for a month. Now the devil is in the details: how is the policy going to be rolled out? What guidance will be given to those charged with executing the President’s vision such as law enforcement and government lawyers? What if Governor Mitt Romney beats President Obama – will those who come forward be thrown out of the country or left to languish for months in immigration clinks?

This week on Rock Center, journalist Kate Snow traveled down to Alabama to explore the devastating effects of HB 56, the souther states new, incredibly restrictive immigration laws that make Arizona look like a cake walk.
The laws have snowballed and caused a string of negative consequences for both the immigrants who live in the area and the farmers and other small businesses who depend on the cheap labor and consider their workers family.

A recent report by the Associated Press highlighted a disturbing trend among Border Patrol agents. It seems that suicides have drastically increased recently. At least 15 agents have killed themselves since February 2008, equaling the largest spike at the law enforcement agency in more than 20 years.

Shakira has been on a whirl-wind media tour recently, speaking out against the passage of the new immigration laws in Arizona, SB 1070. Although some saw her involvement as an affront since she is not a United States citizen, we think it makes sense that Shaki stepped up to the plate; she herself admitted while speaking to the mayor of Phoenix, "I have no papers here."
