Edison Peña sure made his first trip out of his native Chile worth his time! The Chilean miner, rescued just a few weeks ago after surviving 69 harrowing days trapped underground, landed in NYC on Thursday morning. Officials from the New York Road Runners arranged for marathon legend Haile Gebrselassie to pick Peña up from the airport.

Rescued Chilean miner Edison Peña will compete in the ING New York Marathon on November 7. Against all odds, the miner managed to stay in shape while he was trapped underground by running three to five miles everyday through the tunnels. His fellow miners nicknamed him "the Runner" after witnessing his daily ritual.
After hearing how running helped Peña maintain his sanity, marathon officials invited Edison to watch the race, but he had other plans.
