This week marks the 76th anniversary of the Dominican Republic’s Parsley Massacre. It was October 1937 when dictator Rafael Trujillo ordered the killing of an estimated 30,000 Haitians living in the country. Many who were black or suspected of being from the neighboring country, and those who were unable to pronounce the word “perejil” (parsley in Spanish) without an accent, were executed. Many of the murdered had been born in the Dominican Republic. This was Trujillo’s attempt at mass ethnic cleansing.

It’s official: Orange is the New Black is a hit. The Netflix original series, from Weeds creator Jenji Kohan, centers on a women’s prison, where engaged Brooklynite Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) finds herself after a brief, early 20s stint (and lesbian relationship) with a drug-runner. Since its premiere earlier this month, it seems as though the cast of MTV’s Washington Heights have collected a loyal army of fans – and some insurgents as well.
