I love my curly hair now, although I wasn’t a fan of my locks growing up. My friends all had sleek straight hair and most of my family members have wavy hair. I felt awkward. I didn’t understand why I couldn’t get a brush through my tight curls, while all the other girls could comb their hair during recess. More often than not, I ended up pulling it into a ponytail. But eventually, I found solace in music, novellas and films—not from the lyrics or the plots, but from the confident curly-haired Latinas I saw in the spotlight.

Curly Qs: The Conditioner Controversy

Do you rinse out all your conditioner or leave some on when you wash your hair? I leave a small amount on instead of removing completely. I feel this helps keep my hair hydrated and it doesn’t get as frizzy. I’ve noticed the difference when I leave on too much, though, because my curls seem dull. This got me wondering if I should be leaving any regular conditioner on to begin with.

To look extra fly for her cousin's wedding, Mariel Concepcion decided to put a little oomph in her hairdo. The gorgeous, 28-year-old associate editor of Dominican descent normally wears it naturally curly with tight ringlets, but she decided to kick it up a notch and put a hot curling iron to it to further define the look. "I thought, 'I look fabulous,'" she says, "but as soon as I walked in, the first thing one of my cousins told me was that he had a bottle of gel in his car to lend me if i needed it!"
