According to the 2013 World Happiness Report, Latin America showed the most improvement and potential for becoming the happiest region in the world. While Northern Europe still dominated the rankings, Latin America and the Caribbean showed a significant increase in average happiness.

In an attempt to take wildlife protection in a new direction, Costa Rica has decided to close all the country's public zoos and open cages where animals have been kept.
According to CNN, Environment Minister Rene Castro said the country is introducing a "no cages" policy for its animals.

Costa Rica may have approved same-sex marriage by complete accident.
According to a local Costa Rican newspaper called La Nacion, lawmakers approved a bill on Monday that changed article 22 of the "Law of Young People" which previously stated that unions would only be recignized if they were between a man and a woman.

President Óscar Arias of Costa Rica recently confirmed that he has been diagnosed with the Swine Flu. The Noble Peace Prize winner said in a statement that he is being quarantined at his home and receiving treatments of the anti-flu medicine oseltamivir.
"The pandemic makes no distinctions," Arias pointed out, "I am one more case in this country and I am being submitted to the recommendations that health authorities have established for the entire population."

A new study conducted by a British non-governmental group says that Costa Rica is the happiest place on Earth. In the second Happy Planet Index (HPI)—the original index done in 2006—the New Economics Foundation took a look at 143 countries that are home to 99 percent of the world's population. Happiness was measured by an equation that takes into account life expectancy, people's overall satisfaction and their environmental impact.
