Che actor Benicio del Toro was celebrated in Cuba last week for his distinguished body of work. The Puerto Rican star was given the first Tomas Gutierrez Alea award (named after the late Cuban director) by the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba, or Uneac. "It's an honor. I share this with all the artists here. As an artist, I feel that we're all in the same boat," Del Toro said after accepting his honor.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is no stranger to Hollywood’s A-list, so it only makes sense that he would bring Benicio del Toro into his fold. The two actaully have a lot in common. Penelope Cruz isn't just raking in awards in the U.S. these days. The actress was in top form at Spain's 23rd annual Goya Awards on Sunday, winning Best Supporting Actress for—what else?—her performance in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. In her acceptance speech, Cruz returned the love to her home country and thanked VCB helmer Woody Allen for the role.
"I've always been a fan of Woody Allen, and that my peers honor me
for a Spanish film made by him makes me very happy," said Cruz. "Thanks Woody for believing in me."

Casual fans of Benicio del Toro will tell you that the 41-year-old boricua actor has just one facial expression (an incredibly hot expression, natch), and it's called Brooding. Those people aren't paying enough attention.

Not that many people, it seems. While the Latin-themed holiday flick was one of only two new films to open in wide release this week--Keanu Reeves' sci-fi remake The Day The Earth Stood Still was the other--Nothing Like The Holidays earned just $3.5 million to land at #7 on the box office chart.
