This year, many of our Latina celebs have carved time aside from the red carpets and escandalos to give back. And what a tremendous year it’s been!
Some of our fave celebs have placed others before themselves through countless philanthropic endeavors; we’ve seen our seasoned Latinas continue to give, as well as a younger generation emerging with their own worthy causes in mind. Very little feels better than giving back, so we decided to round up our list of Latinas with big hearts – and (of course) big wallets. Check out our list below:

Hollywood actor Martin Sheen is using his political muscle to try and help a Latino man he says was wrongly convicted of murder.
At a press conference Monday, Sheen, who is Latino himself, said he met with the man, Jon-Adrian Velasquez, hours earlier and believes his case “cries out for justice.”

Jessica Alba recently signed on for The One campaign's PSA to bring awareness to the masses about the recent drought and famine in Africa that has killed at least 30 thousand children over the last three months. In a press conference yesterday in Miami, Colombian singer, songwriter and philanthropist Shakira announced that her Fundación Pies Descalzos and FC Barcelona (her boyfriend Gerard Pique’s soccer team) have signed on agreement to build two sports complexes—one in Miami and one in Cartagena, Colombia—for local youth.

Demi Lovato will bring her big voice back to the stage at the Do Something Awards, which will air Thursday, August 18 on VH1 and are being hosted by Glee star Jane Lynch. Lovato will perform her latest hit single, “Skyscraper.” The singer is nominated for two awards, Do Something Charity Song and Do Something TV Star. This will be her first performance since her stint in rehab for emotional and physical issues.

It was a wet, dreary day in Los Angeles yesterday, but Nicole Richie and Joel Madden added a bit of sunshine to one downtown, low-income housing neighborhood. The couple raised funds to build a brand new playground in the area, making good on a pledge they made in Sept. 2008 to raise $35,000 to build the playground through the Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation.
