Calle 13 gave a free concert in Cuba yesterday that attracted tens of thousands of fans from all over the island to the Jose Marti Anti-Imperialist Plaza in the capital city of Havana. Assuring the fans that he was there to talk about “sex, religion and politics,” the provocative leader of the band, Residente (aka René Pérez) went on to speak out against US policy towards the island nation.

The stars came out last night to celebrate the Latin Grammy Awards in Sin City, and the show was an interesting combination of circus freakery, casino gaudiness and Latin love.
The two highlight performances of the evening had to be Calle 13's rousing performance with Rubén Blades of their socially conscious hit, "La Perla," and Alejandro Sanz’s duet with Alicia Keys for their single, "Looking for Paradise."
In case you missed it, here are videos of their performances. Whose do you like best?

Calle 13 swept all five categories they were nominated for at the Latin Grammy Awards, taking home honors for best Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Urban Music Album, Alternative Song and Short Form Music Video. But judging by the chilly reception of the crowd when they picked up the award for Best Record of the Year, it doesn't seem like they'll be getting much dap from their peers.

It seems that the lines of communication have been crossed between Puerto Rican band Calle 13 and president Hugo Chavez. After lead singer René Pérez Joglar wore a shirt to the Los Premios MTV that read, "Chavez por mejor artista pop" the Venezuelan leader took the reference as a compliment.

An upcoming Calle 13 concert scheduled to be held in Puerto Rico's famed Roberto Clemente coliseum has been canceled, apparently as a result of lead singer René Pérez's personal insult of the Republican Governor of Puerto Rico Luis Fortuño while hosting Los Premios MTV last week. Pérez took full advantage of his moment in the spotlight to highlight political issues and causes close to his heart and managed to offend quite a few people along the way.

Puerto Rican duo Calle 13 just released the video for "Fiesta de Locos," the fourth single from the pair’s latest album, Los de Atras Vienen Conmigo. The song, which imagines Residente and Visitante as a couple of mental patients, was inspired by Emir Kusturica’s Balkan gypsy-punk rock music. Filmed during a concert in Buenos Aires last year, the video captures the general revelry of the audience with a few “crazy” little moments spliced in between. Watch carefully for two women making out; a priest getting down; and a guy hugging a rooster.

Calle 13’s documentary Sin Mapa premieres tonight at the New York International Latino Film Festival. The film follows the Grammy Award–winning duo as they travel across South America in search of indigenous music and culture. I recently spoke to Residente about the experience:
Where did you go for this documentary?

René Pérez (aka Residente) of Calle 13 sat down with MTV Tr3s at a recent screening of the new film Pedro, based on the life of Pedro Zamora, the first openly gay and HIV positive cast member ever featured on The Real World, at Florida International University.
