Doctor Charley Ferrer didn't set out to become the only Latina sex and relationship doctor in the United States. In fact, her love of psychology came about almost by accident. Ferrer went back to school to finish her degree in order to demand more money at her job and had to take some extra credits, so she signed up for a Psychology class. One thing led to another and now Dr. Charley is a doctor of human sexuality, holds a Masters degree in counseling psychology and certification as a clinical sexologist under her belt.

The visions came in fragments, drifting in during the steel gray intervals of relative calm, between gusts of tears and sorrow. I saw dogs. Dogs in confinement, to be precise; abandoned, with desolate eyes staring from cold cages. I’m not quite sure why I thought of shelter dogs in those empty hours following my mother’s death, but for reasons I couldn’t understand at the time, I began to scour the Internet for local shelters.

How has being Latina affected your career?
I’ve done stunts for Rosario Dawson and Roselyn Sanchez. And being Mexican makes me a commodity, so I’ve been able to act in a couple of films, too, while the typical stunt person only doubles.
Any traits all stunt women share?

About four years ago I received a big, fat envelope from the college of my dreams. With shaking hands, I cautiously peeled it open to find that New York University was pleased to invite me to join the class of 2008! I proceeded to run around the house, screaming at the top of my lungs. Once I convinced my parents to let me move 3000 miles away, I promptly realized I had no idea what I was in for.

A FEW GOOD MEN
Dear Dolores: I’m a single Latina rapidly approaching the big four-O and having a very hard time meeting a good man. Most men in my age bracket come loaded with baggage. They’re either separated or divorced with children. I don’t have a problem with this, as long as the men have a good and healthy relationship with their children and the mothers, but most do not. I hate the bar/club scene. So, how do I find an eligible man?
