Racial Stereotypes in Advertising are Alive and Well

A new ad campaign for the New York International Latino Film Festival makes fun of Latino stereotypes in an effort to draw attention to the many clichés about Latinos in the movies. One ad features a chart with the varying roles Latinas have played in films, with “maid” beating out such categories as surgeon and judge.

But while the film fest is attempting to create dialogue about these tired Latino depictions, other companies just keep on propagating them. Here’s a sampling:

For a woman who is supposed to be modeling clothing, Eva Mendes sure spends a lot of her time naked! Her latest round of advertisements for Calvin Klein jeans are causing a stir once again, and if the FCC was offended at her minor nip-slip in the Secret Obsession television commercial last year, then they will positively blow their lids at the soon-to-be-released print campaign.

Mayor Of Rio de Janeiro Condemns Sexist Italian Billboards

The Mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes has condemned billboards that are currently up in Italy which depict men, dressed as police from the bustling Brazilian city, molesting and arresting models.

Mayor Paes told Rio's O Globo newspaper that he is considering petitioning the Italian embassy to ask that Relish clothing, the brainchild behind the advertisements, take down the billboards in Italy, which Paes says are "in bad taste."
