If there is one thing I’ve learned during award season, is that by the time the Academy Awards come around, who wins might surprise you. This weekend at the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards, we saw many of the same faces take home statuette’s that have already won in 2014, but it’s tough to predict who will take the most coveted prize of all--- the Oscar.
Matthew McConaughey won the “Best Actor in a Motion Picture” Award at the SAG Awards, Golden Globes, and Critic’s Choice Awards for his portrayal of AIDS patient Ron Woodroof in “Dallas Buyers Club.” Could he be a shoe-in for the Oscar? With competition including Christian Bale, Bruce Dern, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Leonardo DiCaprio, it won’t be an easy win but in the meantime, he seems to be enjoying the ride.
"There's a magic place that we as actors can get, or we at least strive to get to,” Matthew said when he accepted his first ever SAG Award last night. “And you know we always don't get there — but, boy, when we touch it, it's magic."
Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron took home the Critics Choice Award and a Golden Globe Award (SAG did not have this as a category) for “Best Director” his work on the sci-fi drama, “Gravity.” He will compete against David O Russell, Steve McQueen, Alexander Payne, and Martin Scorsese at the Academy Awards on Sunday, March 2nd.
British actress Cate Blanchett took home the “Best Actress in a Motion Picture” SAG, Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award for her work in the Woody Allen film, “Blue Jasmine.” In the press room last night, she mentioned meeting Rita Moreno, who was honored with the Screen Actors Guild 50th Annual Lifetime Achievement Award, was one of the highlights of a great week.
“This has been an extraordinary, extraordinary unexpected week. My husband arrived this morning. I met Rita Moreno and now this [SAG Award], and Robert De Niro gave it to me. So I mean, it doesn’t get much better than that, really.”
In the supporting role category, both Jared Leto and Lupita Nyong’o won SAG Awards last night for their roles in “Dallas Buyers Club” and “12 Years a Slave” respectively. During their acceptance speeches, Jared and Lupita honored their families for their support.
"I want to thank my family who have kept it real," Lupita said. "My dad, he was the first person I called when I got this role. I said, 'Daddy, do you know Brad Pitt? I'm going to be in a movie with him.' "
"I don't know him personally," he replied, "but I'm glad you've got a job."
She responded, "So am I, So am I."
Leto, who took his mother Connie as his date to the Screen Actors Guild Awards, said, “"Last but not least, [thank you] to my mother, the hottest date in town. I just wanna say, thank you for giving me such a shining and wonderful example of the possibilities of life. For showing me the power of dreams and being the best mother in the entire world. I love you."
