Pop Culture: Rita Moreno Oscar

Rita Moreno Wins an Oscar for West Side Story
There’s no denying Rita Moreno had some pretty big shoes to fill in the 1961 film adaptation of West Side Story. After all, she was taking on the role made famous on Broadway by the legendary Chita Rivera. But Moreno’s portrayal of Anita was the stuff of legend, resulting in critical acclaim. In the end Moreno didn’t just make the role her own, she even beat out Judy Garland for Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards—becoming the first Latina to win an Oscar.

Growing up in a small town in Missouri, she collected (and hoarded) magazines and dreamed of working at one someday. She's a pop culture junkie who watches way too much television, and she still hoards magazines.
