Pop Culture: Desi Arnaz

Desi Arnaz stars in I Love Lucy

It’s one of the most popular lines in television history: “Lucy, I'm home!” Desi Arnaz, who was the first Latino star of a network television show, uttered that line to his real-life wife Lucille Ball time and time again on I Love Lucy. The series, which centered on Lucy and her singer/bandleader husband Ricky Ricardo (Arnaz) was the most watched show in the country in four of its six seasons. Hard to believe that TV executives initially balked at the idea of having Ball and Arnaz portray a married couple, telling them Desi's Cuban accent and Latin style would not be agreeable to American viewers. Luckily, the couple overcame that obstacle! And the rest is television history. I Love Lucy remains hugely popular today. More than 60 years after its debut, the show is still seen by some 40 million Americans each year.
