The countdown to the new year in Times Square is getting some help...from none other than U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor

According to Politico, the first Latina Supreme Court Justice will push the ceremonial button to signal the descent of the Times Square New Year’s Eve ball.

Sotomayor -- a Bronx native -- will lead the celebratory crowds and kick off the final countdown.

“Justice Sotomayor is an inspiration to many,” said Times Square Alliance President Tim Tompkins, “It is a privilage to welcome her to our celebration to ring in 2014.”

Sotomayor, whose parents are Puerto Rican, will join a long list of politicians who have officiated the ball drop, including former Secretary of State Colin Powell, and Bill and Hillary Clinton.

The giant New Year’s Even ball is covered in more than 2,600 crystals and is lit from within by more than 32,000 lights. You can catch it on TV on “Dick Clark’s Rocking New Year’s Eve” hosted by Ryan Seacrest on ABC.
