Roel DeLaGarza Jr. is a member of the Marine Corps, but a more important title he has would be “dad.” Father to three children – Alexis, 11, Alyssa, 8, and Trey, 3 – the Corpus Christi native has applied the wisdom provided by his own dad to his parenting. Although he’s rarely able to see his father now that he’s in the military and due to his father’s medical condition, he got the chance to spend time with his family thanks to Mission: Care sponsored by Dove Men+Care! We caught up with Roel to talk family, military and the program. And be sure to check out the end to find out what Dove is doing for other military families in the video!
How long have you been serving? Why did you decide to serve?
I have been serving for 5 1/2 years now. I joined the Marine Corps to change my life – I had two kids at the moment and I really wanted to find a way to support them and my wife Jennifer. I wasn’t making good money in my hometown, which is why I started looking into the Marines. I applied to the Marine Corps and they were willing to take me, and they also provided me with schooling through the university, which I may not have been able to do otherwise. Everything has gone really well and I’m looking forward to serving as many years as I can.
