TRAVEL: Kick Back in Belize

From the world class water activities just off the coast to the jungles and rich Mayan culture inland, there’s something for everyone in Belize!

Ahhh, relaxation. The whole concept is a bit subjective, isn’t it? For some (like yours truly), there’s one path to inner peace and it involves—no, requires—an impossibly blue ocean, white sands and an ice-cold piña colada. The best part about Belize? Its roads to relaxation are diverse.

Nestled between Mexico and Guatemala, this Central American country—the only one whose official language is English, thanks to its status as a British colony until 1973—is fast becoming a haven for beach-lovers, thrill-seekers and eco-conscious travelers alike.

First stop: Ambergris Caye (pronounced “key”), a 25-mile long island just off the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. If you love the ocean, then this is the ultimate destination for you. Ambergris is a major draw for those who want a one-of-a-kind snorkeling experience on their vacation. The island’s main town is San Pedro, a quaint but incredibly vibrant community. During a two-night stay at Ramon’s Village I lounged by the beach that sat just steps away from my cabana, ate delicious fresh fish and snorkeled among nurse sharks and sting rays in the Shark Ray Alley Marine Reserve, which was absolutely thrilling! The best part? San Pedro’s just a 20-minute plane ride from country’s main airport in Belize City.
