Chilean Weightlifter Gives Birth While Training for Competition

Chilean Olympic weightlifter Elizabeth Poblete gave birth to a premature baby boy without ever knowing she was pregnant. Poblete, 22, lives in Brazil and was training when she went into labor. She says she was not feeling well, but had no idea she was expecting a child.

The baby was born on on Dec. 8, three months early, and is currently in intensive care. Poblete was preparing for a competition when her son was born, weighing just 2 and half pounds and measuring 14 inches.

Horacio Reis, the head trainer at the gym, confirmed that the birth was "a surprise.”

"A week ago I acted as a judge in a competition in Chile and this
girl was competing. All went well and she won the competition," Reis told the AFP
news agency. "I could see she was a big girl, round and strong. That's all I noticed."

Though both mother and child were taken to a local hospital in Sao Paolo, Poblete has already been released after reportedly telling journalists that she could no longer afford her health care.
