As Latina.com reported yesterday, Melody Morales dreamed of becoming a "table concierge" at Hawaiian Tropic Zone but was refused employment by managers of the popular midtown Manhattan bikini bar who told her she was "too ghetto" and that she had a "Latin accent." Chip Saltsman is currently a candidate in the running to become the next chairman of the Republican National Committee. We were already pretty miffed at him for recording that "Barack the Magic Negro" song and distributing it on a CD to all of his cohorts for Christmas. But wait! It gets worse. Melody Morales' dream of someday working in a New York's Times Square Hawaiian Tropic Zone was cruelly shattered by a manager who supposedly refused to hire her because she "didn't talk white" and was "too ghetto."

So naturally, Ms. Morales sued, saying, "It was kind of like my dream to work at the Hawaiian Tropic Zone. It's the bikini, I guess." The horror of discrimination apparently knows no bounds.

President Obama made it abundantly clear that one of the top priorities of his administration would be closing Guantanamo Bay and ending torture on the part of the United States. But in order for the controversial detention center to be closed in a year, as per the President's orders, other countries will have to step up and help in absorbing some of the 245 prisoners still being held at Guantanamo. The US has asked other countries to take detainees whom it does not intend to put on trial, and who cannot be sent home for fear they might be mistreated.
