Marco Rubio is not exactly known for a progressive stance on social issues in our country. In fact, I would say that it’s pretty fair to say that he is the opposite of a liberal thinker.
Lately, his staunch stance on social politics is starting to really affect an issue that is near and dear to my heart: immigration reform. While the republican senator from Florida is part of the “Gang of 8” working to craft immigration reform legislation, one thing that he seems to really be looking to stop is any inclusion of LGBT binational couples on any bill.
This is an unforgivable stance.
If he is really refusing any kind of help for gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered families as part of the much-needed immigration reform bill, then Marco is 100% on the wrong side of the immigration debate.
It doesn’t really come as a surprise to me that he feels this way, though. He has long been hostile against gay right but I think it’s about time that he changed his attitude.
On the one hand, I know where he is coming from. He’s Cuban, like me, and I certainly know other older Cuban men who are homophobic. That would almost be an excuse if Marco wasn’t so blind to what is happening in the world.
