Ecuador's leftist candidate Lenin Moreno won the country's presidential race on Sunday, reversing a rightward trend in Latin American politics, but not without resistance.

Conservative contender Guillermo Lasso, a former banker who had claimed to be the victor before the results came in from the country's electoral council, demanded a recount, as did many of his followers who protested on the streets. We will know how to defend the people's will," Lasso said.

Juan Pablo Pozo, the head of the National Electoral Council, responded by asking the candidates and the people to recognize the results.

"Ecuador deserves the ethical responsibility from its political actors to recognize the democratic decision made by the people at the ballot box," he said.
