Growing up, my dad was the epitome of the Latin father—or as we would say jokingly, he was a machista. My mother would make dinner, set the table, and then wait on him hand and foot. Whenever he wanted something, like a spoon, rather than get up and get it himself, he would ask us to get it and joke, “That’s why God gave me three daughters.” Yes, I know you are cringing as you read this, but I’m sure many of you can relate.

When Latina was looking for a woman to write about what it means to be a modern day Latina mom, there was no doubt Natalie Morales of the Today show was it. Brazilian and Puerto Rican, Natalie juggles 2 kids, a full time job and all the unique challenges that come with being a mom and being Latina.

Doña Yolanda Miranda, mother of singer-actress Thalía, said in an interview with Ventaneando TV show that her daughter is trying to give daughter Sabrina Sakaë a little brother or sister.
"That's right, and hopefully she'll give us good news soon. Hopefully next year we'll know already and we'll have another baby for 2011" the proud grandma said during the interview.

Is it un-Latina-like not to want a family?
“Don’t you dare do that to me,” my mother said, and then cried out in Spanish: “¡Estás loca! ¡No me puedes hacer esto!”
We were sitting in the living room of my parents’ house on an otherwise normal Sunday afternoon. Except I had just casually mentioned that I wasn’t sure I wanted to have children. Ever. Which apparently was cause to call in the National Guard.
“Raising a family is the point of life!” she said.
“Not for everyone. Maybe not for me,” I replied.

While child abuse is already on the books as a crime, Brazil just made spanking illegal. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva sent a bill to Congress last week banning domestic corporal punishment (or spanking). The bill says small-scale, quick punishments for misbehavior are seen as "cruel and degrading." Parents caught breaking the law will receive a warning and possibly psychological treatment.

Italian swimwear company Calzedonia released their 2010 Spring/Summer ad campaign this week featuring lovely Brazilian supermodel and mother Gisele Bundchen modeling their sexy bikinis. The photos were shot in Costa Rica in February, a mere two months after she gave birth to son Benjamin Brady. Needless to say, Gisele looks amazing!
