Time Magazine Immigration Issue: "We Are Americans - Just Not Legally"

Immigration politics continues to be a hot button issue with an estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. The latest cover of Time Magazine reads, “We Are Americans Just Not Legally,” and features reporting by Filipino journalist Jose Antonio Vargas (shown in the center).

The cover writer, who wrote a captivating personal essay on growing up as an undocumented immigrant in the U.S. for The New York Times last year, gives a voice to the countless of people being affected by Congress refusing to pass The Dream Act bill, which would legalize undocumented immigrants who have graduated from high school and hope to obtain a higher education.

Photographer, Gian Paul Lozza, enlisted 35 extras to help set the stage for the cover shot. “They come from so many different countries, religions and backgrounds,” said Lozza. “We wanted to bring that diversity to the light. This is not just a problem for Latinos, as we hear about often, but for every culture from around the world.”
