Ex-Governor of Puerto Rico Cleared of All Charges in Corruption Trial

Anibal Acevedo Vila’s month long corruption trial ended Friday when a jury found the former governor of Puerto Rico not guilty on all counts against him, including conspiracy, money laundering and lying to the FBI, the AP reports. Acevedo was facing up to 20 years in prison, but his relief was palpable as soon as the verdict came in. He began to cry as he made the sign of the cross.

Mexico Offering $2 Million For Tips on Top Drug Lords

In an effort to release the deathly chokehold drug lords have taken over their country, Mexican officials are offering a $2 million reward for any information that leads to the arrest of one of 24 top cartel members, and $1 million for 13 of their lieutenants. From the AP:

After being absent for six years, the U.S. military is suggesting it could once again re-establish a presence on the Puerto Rican island of Vieques, the Associated Press is reporting. Angry objections are already being heard from Puerto Rico and beyond.

25-year-old Transsexual Spaniard to Give Birth to Twins

25-year-old Ruben Noe Coronado is expected to give birth to twin boys at the end of September. Coronado, originally born Estefania, was in the process of getting a sex change when he decided to try to get pregnant.

He made the decision to postpone the gender reassignment surgery when his partner, Esperanza Ruiz, 43, found out that she was no longer able to have babies (she has 2 children from a previous relationship). Coronado then started fertility treatments so that he could become pregnant.

Chavez Calls Obama "Ignoramus"

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has resumed trash talking President Barack Obama. In response to the U.S. president’s assertion in a January interview with Univision that Chavez exported terrorism and obstructed progress in Latin America, Chavez said Obama was at best an "ignoramus,” Reuters reports.

Mexican officials announced that the son of Sinaloa drug cartel leader Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada was captured on Thursday. The arrest of drug smuggler Vicente Zambada Niebla, 33, is one of the highest-profile catches of the government's two-year war on drug gangs, Reuters reports.
