Frank Navarro, who teaches ninth-grade history and special education at Mountain View High School, was asked to leave last Wednesday after the school received an email from a concerned parent stating that he discussed the resemblance between both leaders during a lecture.

Navarro, who is an expert on the Holocaust and was named a Mandel Fellow for the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in 1997, told the Mercury News that his lesson was based on historical fact, adding that Hitler’s persecution of Jews and rise to power has “remarkable parallels” to Trump’s rhetoric about Latinxs, Muslims and African Americans.

According to Navarro, who is Mexican-American, he told administration: “I’m not pulling these facts out of my hat. It’s based on experience and work, and if I’m wrong, show me where I’m wrong. And then there was silence.”

Navarro, who has received online threats since news broke of his lesson, has also had a lot of support. A petition on Change.org calling for the reversal of his leave has more than 40,000 signatures.

"I'm overwhelmed and amazed," he said.
