A detention center opening up in Alvarado Texas will now include a special unit for transgender detainees. The facility will have 35 beds for transgender people. This will be the second federal center to include such a center.

This new addition comes in light of advocates saying transgender immigrants are becoming victims of sexual assault during their detention. These same people are also saying it's been hard for them to get hormone replacement treatments.

According to federal guidelines the staff at these detention centers are supposed to ask detainees their gender identity and accommodate them as they would any other person.
