The Best Scholarships for Latino Students

With the Hispanic Scholarship Fund recently hosting its gala and a tech CEO creating a scholarship fund for undocumented students, scholarship talk and opportunities seem to be everywhere and for every type of student. But which should young Latino students apply for?

Here are some great scholarships geared specifically toward Latino students. 

Hispanic Scholarship Fund 

The HSF provides scholarships to graduating high school seniors, undergraduate and graduate students and community college students who want to transfer to a four-year college. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Awards range from $1,000 to $20,000.

Colgate-Palmolive Haz la U Scholarship 

This annual scholarship initiative partners with the HSF to award educational grants. One grand prize winner will receive a one-time $15,000 grant and 14 second place winners will be given a one-time $2,500 educational grant. 

Adelante Fund Scholarship Program 

This is a collective of different scholarships that has awards ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 based on different qualifying factors, like GPA, major and more.

Best Buy Emerging Leaders Scholarship Program 

This program is a national essay contest sponsored by the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) and Best Buy Children’s Foundation. One $15,000 scholarship, one $5,000 scholarship and two $2,500 scholarships are given out based on the essay, which is set to a prompt and has to deal with academic excellence and community service.

Gates Millennium Scholarship Program 

Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (yes, that Bill Gates), these awards are given to students with a 3.3 GPA or higher and who have demonstrated financial need. The scholarship is based around leadership and academic excellence, and is given to 1,000 students annually. The scholarship covers unmet need at any college or university and is renewable. 

NASA-MUST: Motivating Undergraduates in Science and Technology

This awesome, renewable scholarship is offered for undergraduate students (and graduating seniors who plan to enroll in a college) that covers half of tuition and fees, up to $10,000 a year. It also includes a 10-week summer internship with a $6,000 stipend and a $1,000 travel allowance. Applicants must major in the STEM fiends of study, meaning science, technology, engineering or mathematics.

Google Scholarship Program in Computer Science and Computer Engineering

For those already in college, this $10,000 scholarship is open to Hispanic students who are junior-year or senior-year undergrads, or pursuing a Master’s or PhD, with at least a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. The student must also be majoring in computer science or engineering.
