Que?! Women in São Paulo, Brazil are now required to submit the results of a pap smear or a doctor's note proving their virginity before they can be hired.
The city's department of education says that the policy is put in place to prove that women are in good health and won't be taking long leaves of absence while employed, and that other governmental jobs have similar policies. (Again, we say: que?!)
Brazilian women, justifiably, are saying it's a huge invasion of privacy.
"It violates women's rights. It's very intimate information that she has the right to keep. It's absurd to continue with these demands," Ana Paula de Oliveira Castro, a public defender of women's issues in São Paulo, told the Associated Press.
According to the AP, protests have started this past week and will continue until an agreement has been made. We say: this is absolutely absurd. And while the education department assures that it's only to ensure that those taking on jobs won't take a long leave of absence, we have to say: who are you to police women's health? And how long until other factors -- such as virginity or HPV -- come into play in hiring on candidate over another?
