Retired General Murdered by Drug Cartel in Cancún

Retired Brigadier General Mauro Enrique Tello Quiñones was violently tortured and killed over the weekend, the Washington Post reports. The decorated general had retired just one week prior to his assassination in Cancún, where he had moved after being hired by the resort city’s state government to help eradicate the very cartels that ordered his murder.

The global economic crisis, caused in large part by the failings of the U.S. economy, has brought on potentially damning effects for Latin American countries both large and small. According to Rebeca Grynspan, regional head of the UN Development Program (UNDP), failure to take immediate action by the U.S. and Latin American governments could result in a rise in poverty as much as 15% this year alone.

Will Val Kilmer Succeed Bill Richardson as Governor of New Mexico?

Last week, Val Kilmer told the Associated Press that he is seriously considering running for Governor of New Mexico in 2010. Current Governor Bill Richardson's second term will end then and he is forbidden by New Mexico law to run again.

Kilmer was born in Los Angeles but has been living in New Mexico for over 20 years. He is a registered Democrat, and cast an absentee ballot for President Barack Obama while he was recently filming in Bulgaria. New Mexico was a key swing state in the recent presidential election and the Latino vote made a huge impact.

Castro Slams Obama's Economic Plan

In an essay released Monday, ailing Cuban leader Fidel Castro criticized President Barack Obama's economic plans, saying that he intends to print "enormous sums of money" to pull America out of the financial crisis we are facing.
