At first, the police suspected the Mafia, or maybe it was a bad business relationship that went horribly wrong; Jose was a wealthy movie studio executive.  But that would not be the case. Seven months into the homicide investigation, Lyle Menendez, 21, and his brother Eric Menendez, 18, were charged with killing their parents. The 1993 trial ended in a deadlock, but at the conclusion of the second trial, both Lyle and Eric received a life without parole prison sentence in 1996.

On Wednesday, Lyle, now 49, spoke with Megyn Kelly on the Today show. During a phone interview from prison, Kelly asked if Lyle if he regretted killing his parents that fateful night. Lyle responded: "I completely regret—uh, I don't think that, you know, I want in any way looking back to be the judge and jury of my father's actions or my mother's. It's really a regret every day, a regret every day. But at the same time, you really, you know, I can't escape what happened any more than I can escape, sort of the memories of what happened to me."

During the trial, prosecutors argued that the brothers were after their dad’s money, while the defense maintained a history of abuse provoked the murders. Lyle told Kelly that he was dealing with a “horrifying situation” before the shooting death of his parents and his home life caused him to be fearful beyond words.

This isn’t the first time Lyle has spoken about the crime with the media. He told People magazine: This tragedy will always be the most astounding and regrettable thing that has ever happened in my life.” According to Today.com, the Lyle and Eric are in regular contact with each other, and both have gotten married while being incarcerated. The brothers are serving out their sentences in two different prison facilities.
