Marijuana use may soon be completely legal in Uruguay. According to a report by the Associated Press, the South American country’s unprecedented plan to place its government at the center of the legal marijuana business has made its way halfway through congress.
Just before midnight on Wednesday and after 13 hours of fiery debate, all 50 members of the governing Broad Front coalition approved the proposal in a party line vote. The measure is now set to go to the Senate, where Uruguayan president Jose Mujica’s coalition has a bigger majority.
Passage of the measure is expected to come, which will Uruguay the world's first nation to create a legal, regulated marijuana market.
