They say kids are growing up way too fast these days, and today’s news about a 10-year-old Colombian girl giving birth just verifies that statement is a fact.
The young girl, whose name is being withheld due to privacy concerns, is one of the youngest in history to deliver a baby. The child was 5-pound, 5-ounce baby and was born via caesarean section.
The most astonishing part is that the girl didn’t even realize she was pregnant when she arrived at the hospital bleeding and experiencing contractions.
Dr. Fabio Gonzalez the gynecologist who treated her tells Univision’s Primer Impacto that he’s already seen two cases like this. “We hope there aren't anymore.”
Fox News reports that the girl is part of the Wayuu tribe in Manaure, Northern Colombia, a town in the Colombian Department of La Guajira, which is comprised of various indigenous tribes.
C-section delivery for such a young mother is not unusual and Dr. Kimberly Gecsi explains to ABC News why that is, “The baby’s head needs to come through a bony outlet. But in a young girl, the pelvis may not be ready or big enough to deliver a baby,” said Dr. Gecsi, an OB/GYN at UH Case Medical Center in Cleveland.
“These girls are not ready to be pregnant. Their bodies are not mature,” Dr. Gecsi tells ABC News. “They may be able to get pregnant, but being able to have a baby is a whole other situation.”
It is unclear how the young girl got pregnant or who the father is, but police are investigating the case.
