The Las Vegas Metro Police Explorers put together two car washes this past weekend in order to raise money to cover funeral costs for a fellow Explorer who was killed last Thursday in a car-motorcycle accident.

Angel Velasquez, 19, died Thursday evening at Sunrise Hospital after a hit-and-run incident.

According to witness statements and evidence at the scene, Velasquez was traveling East on Sahara Avenue in a 2013 Honda motorcycle when the driver of a 2013 Volkswagen struck him as he was approaching Van Patten Street.

Velasquez, the son of a Metro police officer, became an Explorer at age 16 hoping to one-day join the police department just like his dad. Velasquez was also studying Criminal Justice at the College of Southern Nevada.
