High School Students Harass Black and Latino Rival Basketball Team With Pro-Trump Chants & Banners

A high school basketball game in Connecticut got political on Tuesday for all the wrong reasons.

In a conference semifinal game, the students of Canton High School harassed the mostly Black and Latinx basketball players of Hartford's Classical Magnet, yelling "Trump, Trump, Trump" during free throws and "he's our president" at other moments throughout the game. Some of the students even wore Trump-Pence t-shirts and held banners supporting the divisive president.

In response to the racially motivated taunts, Classical Magnet principal Zandralyn Gordon wrote a letter to the community on Thursday saying that she is "extremely disappointed in the behavior of some of Canton’s fans in the stands."

Canton representatives, along with parents of students at the high school, have apologized to Classical. Andrew DiPippo, the Canton principal, sent a statement to his students' parents.

“While students’ right to free speech and forming educated opinions about politics and current events is a cornerstone of our educational system, the exact point where political opinion converges with disrespect, discrimination or hate speech must be separated,” he said, adding that he was disappointed in the students that did not act in Canton’s spirit “of community.”

The school has identified seven to eight students as the main offenders of Tuesday's derision, though no disciplinary action has currently been announced.

As for the game, mirroring the Black and brown resistance to Trump’s presidency, the racist jeers did not deter the players of Classical, who won 48-47.
