It’s Sonia Sotomayor’s birthday. The first Latina to join the Supreme Court, this “wise Latina” has definitely left her mark. We’re celebrating with these 10 fun facts about Justice Sotomayor. Read on!
1. She’s a comic book hero!
Sotomayor got the Wonder Woman treatment in 2010, when her story was made into a comic book series that also featured other notable women such as Hillary Clinton. Not too shabby!
2. She can cut a rug.
Joining La Bamba star Esai Morales at the Noche Musical gala for The National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts, Sotomayor cut loose without breaking rhythm.
3. She hates knock-offs.
As a young attorney, Sotomayor was involved in the early days of counterfeit enforcement, where she prosecuted those selling fake designer bags and was even a part of the event termed the “Fendi Crush” in 1986, where fake Fendi bags were smashed by a garbage truck as a message to those who buy and sell these goods.
4. She saved baseball.
A true Yankees fan, in 1995 Sotomayor ended a 232-day long baseball strike when she ruled against the owners in favor of the players. Play ball!
5. She’s a lover (as well as a fighter).
She officiated one of her ex-aides’ marriage in a civil ceremony in 2009. So cute!
6. She can tell you how to get to Sesame Street.
She ruled on some Sesame Street arguments, including one between Goldilocks and Baby Bear. Hearing both sides is what justice is all about, right?
7. Perry Mason was her law inspiration.
Sotomayor attended Princeton on a scholarship, and credits her interest in law to the show Perry Mason.
8. She has diabetes.
One year before her father passed away, Sotomayor was diagnosed with type-1 diabetes at the age of eight. She injects insulin up to four times a day, and speaks to groups about diabetes and how it doesn’t stop her from becoming the person she wants to be.
9. She was raised in the housing projects of New York.
Her father, a factor worker, died when Sotomayor was young, and her single mom raised two kids: Sonia and her brother. Her brother is now a doctor. We think they make their mami proud!
10. She has both Republican and Democratic supporters.
George H. W. Bush appointed Sotomayor to the District Court for the Southern District of New York. Later, in 1998, President Bill Clinton nominated her to the 2nd Circuit, and she was confirmed with bipartisan support in a 67-29 vote.
